Portrait of Mark AtosARTIST'S STATEMENT
Industry and institution transformed by nature is a prominent theme in my work. I have a very strong focus on The Interstitial Spaces; those places that we may pass by every day of our lives without taking the time to notice them, and spaces, no longer accessible, that were once meccas of activity, be it industrial, institutional, residential, or commercial.

The carefully exposed dichotomies of active urban constructs and their atrophy when forgotten serve to pose the question: "What will happen here, where I stand, when I'm gone?" There is no condemnation of human culture in my work, no moral message that what we do as a species is wrong. Instead, I present the concept that our constructs, while beautiful in their own right, retain beauty and appeal throughout their lifespan, until nature's reclamation is complete.

Take the time
to walk,
to explore, and
to experience
our interstitial spaces.

BIOGRAPHY
Mark Atos has focused on professional photography since early 1994, but his love affair with the lens and film began long before then, at the age of ten.

Born in 1977 in Brockville, Ontario to parents Jane (née Reed) and Sheldon Atos, Mark is a graduate of Algonquin College (Mechanical Engineering Technology), and a full time Business Analyst for Public Works and Government Services Canada.

Self trained, self taught, and self represented in the world of Canadian Photography, Mark's eye catches those sights that are most often ignored, and makes them beautiful.

Using a combination of technologies, from Digital SLR to medium format and 35mm, all the way to toy cameras like his favourite 1952 Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Flash, Mark strives not for the perfect technical photograph, but for the perfect emotional feel from his shots.
